In order to stay in Japan over the limit of Temporary Visitors Visa, you need to apply for Certificate of Eligibility of a particular VISA STATUS which is applicable to your activity in Japan and receive RESIDENCE CARD based on the VISA STATUS granted to live and/or work in Japan. There are around 30 categories of VISA STATUS, you must find the most appropriate one among them based on your activity etc. and satisfy the requirement.

VISA STATUS can be mainly classified into 2 types below according to the activity.
The Immigration Office grants you a VISA STATUS with specific period of stay based on application, considering your activity in Japan and all the aspects of your background and circumstance.
ACTIVITY BASED STATUS
Activity based visa status is also classified into 3 types; For Work, For Non-work and Designated.
FOR WORK
VISA STATUS classified as “For Work” are allowed to engage in working with income/earnings.

FOR NON-WORK
VISA STATUS classified as “For Non-work” are NOT allowed to engage in working with income/earnings without obtaining a permission called PERMISSION to ENGAGE in OTHER ACTIVITY / 資格外活動許可. Permission to Engage in Other Activity allows you to work for certain period of time limited under this permission. Temporary Visitor is not subject to this permission.

RESIDENTIAL STATUS and PERMANENT RESIDENT
VISA STATUS classified as “Residential Status and Permanent Resident” is for those who are eligible for Permanent Resident or those who are (or “were” in some specific cases) a spouse/child of Japanese or Permanent Resident, or those who have blood relationship to Japanese nationals.
These are not VISA STATUS divided by the type of work or activity in Japan, so it allows you to engage in all types of work.
