Have you ever considered a possibility for PERMANENT RESIDENT (PR) application based on HSP score even though you don’t obtain HSP visa status at this moment?

You would possibly be eligible for PERMANENT RESIDENT in case you satisfy all items below even though you don’t currently obtain HSP visa status;

  • you currently obtain 3-years or 5-years of period of stay under FOR WORK type of visa status
  • you satisfy other requirements for PR except the “10-years residence requirement”
  • you can possibly get enough score on HSP Point Table both at present and at the time of specific year(s) ago.

Of course, this scheme is also applicable to those who currently hold HSP visa status.

TIPS to CALCULATE your HSP SCORE

Here’s some tips to calculate your HSP score accurately;

Category of HSP

There are 3 different categories on the HSP Point Calculation Table.

After you download HPS point table, you will find each tab/sheet in excel/spreadsheet.
You need to use a appropriate one corresponding to your current activity and visa status.

Academic background

Basically, your academic background to get the HSP score should be related to your current activity in Japan (In most of cases, your academic background relates to your current activity if you currently obtain FOR WORK type of visa status).

In case you have multiple degrees in different area of studies, you can get bonus of 5 points. In that case, academic transcript might be required to confirm whether each of your degrees can be classified as different area of studies. If the area of study is stated clearly on each Certificate of Degree, it is fine to provide a copy of both certificates.

Professional career

You can count the period of working as a professional, and the career/occupation has to be related to your current activity. In this period, you must be engaging in working as a professional. Therefore, period of part-time and internship cannot be included to this section.

You will need to provide documents/certificates signed by ex-employers or organizations to prove the period of employment and your job responsibilities for work as a professional. If it would be difficult to contact ex-employers, there are some ways to prove your career such as providing official documents issued by authorities (Pension/Employment Record book etc.) depending on the country you work at.

Annual Salary

For HSP points at present on Annual Salary section, it should be calculated based on the amount of your salary (total of taxable salary / before tax) starting to be paid from the following month of PR application.

Example: Applying for PR in September 2019

In case of applying for PR based on 70 – 79 points at present (at the time of PR application in September 2019):

  • For the point at present; annual salary based on future salary from September 2019 to August 2020.
  • For the point of 3 years ago; annual salary paid from September 2016 to August 2017.

In case of applying for PR based on 80 points or more at present:

  • For the point at present; annual salary based on future salary from September 2019 to August 2020.
  • For the point of 1 year ago; annual salary paid from September 2018 to August 2019.

To prove the annual salary in the past, you use a copy of payslips you received each month. To prove the annual salary for the future one year, you should ask your employer to issue “Certificate of (Expected) Salary / 給与支払(見込)証明書”.

LETTER of REASON

You should provide the Letter of Reason explaining why you apply for PR including brief explanation of your background, motivation of coming to Japan, your activities and achievement in Japan, and future plan etc.

There is no specific template for this letter, you can prepare it in free format. You need the Japanese translation if it is written in other language.

GUARANTOR

You need a guarantor for PR application.
Guarantor must be a Japanese national or PERMANENT RESIDENT living in Japan who can prove his/her occupation and stable income.

Freelance or sole-proprietor can be the guarantor, but a person with no job/income or a dependent is not eligible even though the Immigration Office doesn’t require any certificates of income or tax payment at the time of submission. However, it would be possible to be requested those documents such as Income/Tax Certificate and Tax Payment Certificate in some case. In case the guarantor is a freelance/sole-proprietor, a copy of tax return form (with the Tax Office’s seal) would be required as a proof of occupation.

For the details of the guarantor, please check the following webpage; GUARANTOR
