For non-Japanese residents in Japan on a visa with a set expiration date, the MyNumber card expires on the same date as the Residence Card. (* Visa holders without a set expiration date, such as Special PR, PR and HSP2 are excluded from the subject.)

Therefore, if the expiry date of your Residence Card changes due to an extension of your period of stay or a change in your visa status, you will need to update the expiry date of your MyNumber card as well at your local city/ward office.
Under the MyNumber system;
Residence Card holders must process "Extension of MyNumber card Duration" by the date of expiry date of MyNumber card. Your MyNumber card will automatically become invalid without any notice if you do not take action at the city/ward office in your resident area before the card expires.
Under the Immigration system, your visa status remains valid during the “Grace Period” automatically after applying for a Change of Status of Residence or Extension of Period of Stay (visa renewal). However, the Immigration Office and the city/ward offices are not connected – the expiry date of your MyNumber card will not be extended automatically when your period of stay enters the “Grace Period”.
Please be advised that you must inform your local city/ward office in advance if the screening for your visa renewal or change of visa status is unlikely to be completed before your MyNumber card expires.

However, you don’t need to be worry if you forget to extend the duration of your MyNumber card. Actually, you can apply for re-issuance of the card (you need some money, though) at the city/ward office without any penalty after receiving your new Residence Card.
